Birth of Francisis Josephus Gnugesser

These are the parents of Anton of Affing.  There were so many Gnugessers with similar names living in a relatively small area that I was lucky to be able to make a solid identification in this record. The link backwards to my Anton was the birth date and parent's names listed in the marriage documents further below.  The task would have been more difficult without these.

Here is the baptismal record for Anton's father.  (In these and other records I have cropped the images to make them manageable and to fit the page.  Whenever possible, I Photoshop the year of the record into the image– but not in this case.

Francis Joseph was born 6 August 1783.  His parents were Francis Antonis Gnugesser, a semicolonus in Burg Magerbein and his mother was Maria Ursula.  The godparents were Francis Gnugesser, colonus in Reimleshof and his wife Maria Anna.

Comment: It may look like there is a number before the 6 in the date, but this is an astrological sign for the day of the week that is not discernable in this exposure.  It seems that there are many Latin variations of Francis!  The names of both villages are different from the modern spelling, but there is no doubt of their identity. They are within a 2 km walk.  Reimertshof today is little more than a single farm!

Following the name of the mother in these records was usually a notation beginning with "Bened: and a date a few days after the birth.  I do not know what this means

Betrothal and Marriage of Francis Joseph to M. Theresia Strasser

In these church books I found something I have not encountered before: betrothal contracts. I am not familiar with what they are supposed to do so my interpretation may be flawed. A sponsalia is related to a betrothal.  On 6 Feb 1806 the honorable young man, Fr. Joseph Gnugesser, whose father is Fr. Anton Gnugesser the small farmer from Burgmagerbein and whose mother is M. Ursula, gets engaged.  The bride will be the young woman M. Theresia Strasserin whose father is Johann Michael Strasser of Ziswing. and whose mother is M. Anna.  Witnesses include Sebastian Gnugesser of Burg Magerbein, and Joseph Endres of Ziswing. I do not understand the abbreviation P.M., nor the P. Placido.

And below is the record of the marriage just 12 days later. on the 18th of Feb, Josephus Gnugesser, the honorable young man of the honorable parents Francis Antonii Gnugesser (semicol. in Burgmagerbein) and M. Theresia, his wife.   Son Joseph marries the legitimate and honorable young woman Maria Theresia Strasser who is the daughter of Michael Strasser- farmer from Ziswing and the farmer's wife Maria Anna.

There are witnesses (testibus) Bartholomas Dauber of ??? and Joseph Endres of Ziswing.  In a great blessing we are given the birthdates of the groom and bride.  This and the parents names allow the link to the birth record at the top of this page.

Comment: It appears that at some later time, when the priest was going through the books (perhaps in compiling a family register) that a clarification was made in the name: Franz is added. This is the only instance so far that suggests that the locals would have used the name Franz instead of Francis.  Which would you rather be 200 years ago?  There is also a date added on the right when something happened: oid (or) eid ann. 1778.  Perhaps the significance of this will reveal itself later.

Of course, the names of the In-laws allows us to reach back another generation.  We will go there next.
