These are baptisms in the year 1855. Maria was born 17 May 1855, presumably in Newark. Her father was Friedrich Ecker, a goldschmied (goldsmith) here and his wife Barbara gebornne Bohnenberger. Godparents were Johann Rothfuss and his wife Maria. The cross under Maria's name indicates that she died. A date of death is given in the last column but I do not understand the all notations there. I have a death record described below. She is record #80 who died on 18 July and was buried the next day. She is the little daughter of Friedrich and Barbara. She was 2 years, 2 months, and 1 day old. The next column contains the names of witnesses (Zeugen). There is an undertaker amd another. I think the name is Johann Esser. Many of the witnesses in other entries is a family member. I do not know if that is the case here. The last column (Bemerkungen) is for remarks and this one points to the entry for her baptism, but I do not understand the terminology yet. Maria is the first child of Friedrich and Barbara known to me. They were married in 1854 in Newark so this may well have been their first child. The couple would also lose their next child as an infant. The Rothfuss family will be seen again. Whether they are related remains to be proven. |
