Content of the Record:

I found this photograph after the death of my mother Gloria Insel Hasselbacher.  I do not remember having seen it before, not do I recall having heard her name. Looking at the labels attached to some other old photos, I think the handwriting on the back is that of my Grandmother Edith Margaret Ecker Insel.

Conclusions and Speculations:

What can we learn from this photo?  How old do you think the young woman in it is? Could this be a  photo from the time of Kate's immigration in 1870 when she was 18 years old?  Is she still dressed as an Irish woman?  Was it taken around the time of her marriage?  Do we see any family resemblances? (I think there is.)

The portrait was made in Newark. I would love to know when she settled in New Jersey.  I looked hard in New York City for evidence she lived, married, or had a child there without results so far.  Perhaps I should look even harder in New Jersey.

Note the spelling of Katherine.  I have seen Kate's name spelled Catherine and Catharine but I think she probably was called Kate.
