Hazelbaker Census Records 1800 - 1840 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Below
is a listing of all of the 1800 - 1840 census records I have been able to
find for Hazelbaker families. Before 1850 only the head of household's name
was listed. The other family members were counted and catagorized by sex,
age, and race. I have compared these records to Jack White's excellent family
database and listed the family members where I could identify them. Unfortunately the Virginia census records for 1790 have been lost, so the first record we have is for "Elisabeth Hazlebaker" in Pike Run, Washington County, Pennsylvania (see picture below). I have included records with the following spellings: Hazelbaker, Hazlebaker, and Haselbaker, along with some other records with some unusual spellings due to bad handwritting or bad spelling on the part of the original census taker. I've put the names as they appear in the Ancestry.com indexes, rather than what I believe is the correct spelling. I have included a few scans of the names so you can see for yourselves what the originals were like. Any addition of records I've missed would be appreciated and any discussion about the accuracy of my identifications is welcomed. Greg Humphrey, April 2008 [Contact Greg here] |

The

Females 10 - 15: Polly (1797 - 1800?) Females over 45: Elizabeth (1758?) Other Free: Ralph, Joseph, James, and either Henry or Louisa Daniel's household Males under 10: Henry (1805), Daniel Shively (1808), Christopher (1810) Males between 16 and 25: Daniel Females under 10: Sarah (1807) Females between 16 and 25: Daniel's first wife (name unknown) Jacob's household Males 16 - 25: Jacob (1796?) ![]() John's household Males under 10: Jonathan (1820) Males between 26 and 45: John (1782) Females under 10: Ruth (1814), Jane (1815), and Maria (1818) Females between 26 to 44: Mary (1791). George's household Males under 10: Anthony (1816), Jacob (1818), Andrew (1820) Males between 19 and 25: unknown Males between 26 and 45: George (1790) Females under 10 would be Mary (1820) Females between 16 to 25: Matilda (1793) She is actually 27 and should have beem counted in the next column. Abraham's household The ancestry.com index lists an Alexr Hazlebaker in 1820. The person listed above him is "Benjm Hick" and the "j" from Benjm partially obsures the name below it (see picture below). "Alex" could possibly be "Abr". The record does fit what we know of Abraham's family fairly well. Males under 10: George (1816) Joseph (1818) Males between 26 and 45: Abraham (1792) Females under 10: Sarah Jane (????) Females between 16 to 25: Julia (1794) Jacob's household Jacob's record is interesting because supposedly he didn't marry until about 1829, yet in 1820 he appears to have a family. Males under 10: unknown Males between 26 and 45: Jacob (1796) Females under 10: unknown Females between 16 and 25: unknown Females between 26 and 44: unknown Ralph Smith is found on the 1820 census, but his household doesn't have any white family members counted. Polly has probably married and moved out, but where did Elizabeth go? Where is Daniel and his family? We know that he moved to Ohio sometime around 1820 around the time that his first wife died, but he is not found in either the Pennsylvania or Ohio censuses. |

George's household Rostraver Pennsylvania is in Westmoreland County and the township boarders Washington and Fayette Counties. The name Hzlebecker is from the Ancestry.com index. To me the name on the original document looks like "Hazlebecker" (See picture below). Males 10 to 15: unknown Males 40 to 50: Jacob (1796) Females between 15 and 20: unknown Females between 40 and 50: unknown He supposedly married Sarah Masten about 1829, but if she were born abt 1810 she would only be 20 at this time. The one explaination that would make sense was that he had a wife and family before he married Sarah and that his marriage to Sarah didn't occur until after 1830. The 1830 census is the first one to list all five of the surviving brothers, but where are the records for Daniel Shively Hazelbaker and Christopher Hazelbaker, Daniel's second and third sons who remained in Pennsylvania? |
