When I visited the Insel Family Grave at Lutheran Cemetery in Feb 2008, I also found the grave of my Great-Great Grandfather Gustav Roemhild. There were two other names on the stone: Lillie and Alexander Roemhild. Armed with new names and information I revisited the NYC Archives and found this death certificate of Lillie Roemhild.

She died in Brooklyn on April 16, 1889 of intestinal obstruction at the age of only 22. Her family names is spelled Roemhild. It is confirmed that her father is the German-born Gustav Roemhild, but it is of interest that her mother is called Amanda Roemhild, also of Germany. This is not the same name given in two different places as the mother of Alvina (Roemhild) Insel who is named Mary Francesca Hauckouf and who is said to have been born in New York. This implies that Gustav Roemhild was married more than once and that Lillie is Alvina's half sister. It also makes me wonder what the origin of the family name 'Amanda' came from as Alvina would name her oldest child 'Amanda."

Lillie died a number of years before her father, and presumably before the main stone was placed. There was a displaced stone log marker at the site with the names 'Lillie Allie' on it. Presumably it was placed as a temporary marker.

I could not find death certificates for Gustav Roemhild or his son Alexander. (I did find another one or two Roemhild death certificates, but I do not know their significance, and I did not do an exhaustive document search yet. Wives Amanda Roemhild or Mary Hauckouf are not apparently in the grave which was purchased by Amanda Roemhild. I am hopeful that the final information provided by the cemetery will help me find further documents.
